Does Red Light Therapy Really Help with Hair Growth?
Hair loss is one of those topics where people are, understandably, desperate for something that actually works and where the market is absolutely flooded with products that don't. So when red light therapy comes up as a potential option, a healthy dose of scepticism is the right starting point. Here's what the research actually says.
The Backstory
Interest in light and hair growth isn't new. It dates back to 1967, when a researcher testing low-energy lasers on mice, expecting to study cancer risk, noticed an unexpected side effect: the treated mice grew hair faster than untreated ones. That accidental discovery kicked off decades of research into what's now called low-level laser (or light) therapy, LLLT, for hair loss.
Since then, it's moved well beyond mice. LLLT devices - combs, helmets and caps, have been studied specifically for androgenetic alopecia (the medical term for male and female pattern hair loss), and the results are more substantial than you might expect from a wellness trend.
What the Evidence Shows
This is one of the better researched applications of red light therapy, which is refreshing in a space that's often light on real data. A systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 11 double-blind, sham-controlled randomized trials found a statistically significant increase in hair density in people treated with LLLT compared to sham devices. A few things stand out from that body of research:

How It's Thought to Work
The mechanism lines up with what's understood about red light therapy elsewhere in the body. Hair follicles go through natural growth cycles, and follicles that have shrunk or become dormant (as happens in pattern hair loss) still have some capacity to be reactivated. Red light, typically in the 630–660nm range, is believed to stimulate mitochondrial activity in follicle cells, potentially extending the active growth phase and improving blood flow to the scalp, both of which are associated with healthier, more sustained hair growth.
What to Actually Expect
Even with solid research behind it, it's worth being realistic:
- This isn't a cure. LLLT slows and partially reverses pattern hair loss for many users it doesn't guarantee dramatic regrowth and it works best on follicles that are miniaturised but not yet fully dormant.
- It takes months, not weeks. The clinical trials showing results ran 16–24 weeks of consistent use. This is a slow biological process.
- It's most studied for androgenetic alopecia specifically. The evidence base is much thinner for other causes of hair loss, like alopecia areata or hair loss from stress or illness.
- It often works best alongside other treatments. Several studies suggest LLLT can complement, rather than replace, established treatments like minoxidil.
The Bottom Line
Of all the claims made about red light therapy, hair growth for pattern hair loss is one of the more credible ones, it's backed by multiple randomized, sham-controlled trials and a meta-analysis showing a real, measurable effect. It's not a miracle cure and it asks for patience over months rather than weeks. But for people dealing with early-to-moderate pattern hair loss, it's a legitimately evidence supported option worth considering ideally as part of a broader approach rather than a standalone fix.
