How Red Light Therapy Works

Red Light Therapy (RLT), or photobiomodulation (PBM), uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infared light to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes.

‘Red Light’ refers to light in the visible spectrum (typically 620-700 nanometers), while ‘near-infared light’ lies just beyond the visible spectrum (700-1100 nanometers).  These wavelengths have the unique ability to penetrate the skin and be absorbed by our cells – specifically the mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of each cell.  When this light hits the mitochondria, it stimulates the production of Adenosine Triphospate (ATP) – your body’s cellular
fuel. Essentially, the more ATP = more energy for your cells to repair, regenerate, reduce inflammation, and function optimally.

More ATP = faster repair, higher performance, and slower ageing at the cellular level.

It is that simple.

1. Mitochondria

Mitochondria are present in nearly every cell in the body, often in the hundreds or even thousands. They act like miniature power stations, creating the energy (ATP, or adenosine triphosphate) that cells rely on to function and survive. They continue to work, grow, and multiply, which is vital because our entire body depends on them.

2. Red Light

Red light and near-infrared (NIR) are key sources of energy for the body, yet most people are exposed to very little of them. Since we spend up to 90% of our lives indoors, whether in cars, at work, or at home, our mitochondria generate less ATP, which means less energy. Over time, this shortage can have a negative impact on the body.

3. Boosting Energy

You can support the energy production in your cells by giving them the specific wavelengths of light they naturally use from sunlight. These wavelengths play an important role in cellular respiration. Red light, in the range of 610-760 nm, is especially helpful for the skin. Near-infrared light, between 760-1,400 nm, goes much deeper, reaching into muscles, bones, joints, and even organs.

4. Our Body

When your cells have more energy, your body benefits in many ways, from better regeneration and higher energy levels to less inflammation. Red and near-infrared light play a direct role in this process, helping your body cope better and recover faster, whether it’s your muscles, skin, joints, or even your immune system.

5. Experience the Daily Benefits

Life feels better when your body gets enough red light. It doesn’t just support athletic performance- it improves everyday wellbeing too. Most importantly, it helps you feel good because your body works the way it should.

Instead of spending hours in the sun, just a few minutes with a Magma® panel can provide the same benefits, all without the harmful effects of UV radiation.
